IELTS coaching, Lahore and online

The band you need is not 7.0. It depends where you are going.

Half the students who walk into our Lahore office are preparing for a score they do not need, and the other half are preparing for one that will not get them in. Start with the table below. Find your country, find your number, then build a plan around it.

Band requirements

What band do I actually need?

Two numbers matter, and students constantly confuse them. The university requirement is what gets you an offer letter. The visa floor is the legal minimum for the immigration authority. You have to clear both, and they are not the same number.

🇦🇺Australia

Typical university requirement

6.5 overall, no band below 6.0

Visa or admission floor

6.0 overall for the Student visa (subclass 500)

Universities usually want 6.5 with nothing under 6.0. The visa itself has a separate, lower floor of 6.0 overall, and 5.5 is accepted where you package at least ten weeks of ELICOS English before the main course. Nursing, teaching and some health courses ask for 7.0 in every band.

🇬🇧United Kingdom

Typical university requirement

6.0 to 6.5 overall, usually 5.5 to 6.0 minimum in each band

Visa or admission floor

Ask whether they want IELTS for UKVI

This is where Pakistani students lose money. IELTS Academic and IELTS for UKVI (Academic) are the same test but a different booking, a different centre approval and a different fee. Pre-sessional English and any course below degree level require the UKVI version. Confirm with your university in writing before you book, because a normal IELTS booked by mistake cannot be converted.

🇨🇦Canada

Typical university requirement

6.5 overall for most universities, 6.0 for many colleges

Visa or admission floor

No fixed national English score for the study permit

The Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, so the old rule of 6.0 in every single band no longer applies as a visa gate. Your offer letter now sets the English bar, and financial evidence carries more weight than it used to.

🇺🇸United States

Typical university requirement

6.5 to 7.0 overall, 7.0 or higher at competitive universities

Visa or admission floor

No English score on the F-1 visa itself

The university sets the bar, not the embassy. Many US universities still prefer TOEFL, and some graduate programmes want a specific minimum in Writing or Speaking rather than just an overall score. Read the department page, not the international office page.

🇩🇪Germany

Typical university requirement

6.5 overall for most English-taught programmes

Visa or admission floor

German-taught programmes need TestDaF or DSH instead

If the degree is taught in English, IELTS is normally accepted at 6.5, sometimes 6.0. If it is taught in German, IELTS is irrelevant and you need a German proficiency test. Do not start IELTS prep until you know which language your course is in.

🇫🇮Finland

Typical university requirement

6.0 to 6.5 overall, with a writing minimum at many universities

Visa or admission floor

Set by the university, checked at admission

Finnish universities often specify a minimum in Writing, commonly 5.5 or 6.0, separately from the overall score. A 6.5 overall with 5.0 in Writing can still be rejected.

🇮🇹Italy

Typical university requirement

6.0 to 6.5 overall for English-taught degrees

Visa or admission floor

Set by the university

Italian public universities are generally at the lower end, often 6.0. Some accept a B2 certificate from other providers, which can be cheaper and faster than IELTS.

🇭🇺Hungary

Typical university requirement

5.5 to 6.0 overall for most programmes

Visa or admission floor

Stipendium Hungaricum courses list their own requirement

Hungary is one of the most forgiving English bars in Europe, which is part of why it is such a good fully funded target for Pakistani students. Check the specific programme page in the Stipendium catalogue, because a few courses ask for more.

These are the ranges we see across mainstream courses in July 2026. Individual universities and individual courses set their own bar and move it without warning, and visa rules change. Treat this as general information, not immigration advice, and confirm the current requirement with the institution and with a registered migration agent before you rely on it.

The test

Four modules, and where each one kills you.

The whole test runs about two hours and forty five minutes. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken back to back in one sitting. Speaking may be on the same day or within a week of it.

Listening

About 30 minutes, 40 questions

Four recordings, from a phone conversation up to a university lecture, played once only.

Where students lose marks

Spelling and plurals. Students hear the answer correctly and then write it wrong. In the computer test you get two minutes to check, not ten to transfer.

Reading

60 minutes, 40 questions

Three long passages in Academic, workplace and general texts in General Training. No extra time to transfer answers.

Where students lose marks

Time, not vocabulary. Most Pakistani students can read the passages. They cannot read three of them plus 40 questions in sixty minutes without a scanning method.

Writing

60 minutes, 2 tasks

Task 1 is a chart, map or process in Academic, and a letter in General Training. Task 2 is a 250 word essay and carries double the weight.

Where students lose marks

This is the band that holds you at 6.0. Task 2 is marked on task response, coherence, lexical range and grammatical accuracy. Memorised template essays are exactly what an examiner is trained to spot.

Speaking

11 to 14 minutes, face to face

Introduction and interview, then a two minute long turn from a cue card, then a discussion.

Where students lose marks

Silence and one-word answers. You are marked on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, not on whether your opinion is correct. A confident wrong opinion outscores a correct mumble.

Which version

Academic or General Training.

IELTS Academic

For university and professional registration. Reading uses academic journal style passages and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, a map or a process. If you are applying for a degree anywhere, this is your test.

IELTS General Training

For skilled migration, work, and some vocational or school routes. Reading uses everyday and workplace texts and Writing Task 1 is a letter. Australian skilled migration accepts General Training for its English levels.

If you are not certain which one you need, take Academic. It is accepted in more places, and a General Training result will not be accepted for a university offer.

Scoring

How the overall band is built.

Each module is scored 0 to 9 in half bands. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Worked example

Listening7.0
Reading6.5
Writing5.5
Speaking6.5
Average 6.375, reported as6.5

A 6.5 overall, and still rejected by most Australian universities, because Writing is below 6.0. The overall band gets you nothing if the university sets a minimum in every band. Fix the weakest module, not the average.

Coaching at One Call Solution

We start with a mock, not a promise.

No honest teacher can tell you your band before they have heard you speak and read what you write. So the first thing we do is a full diagnostic mock under real timing. From that we know your true starting band, which module is holding you down, and how many weeks it will realistically take.

A diagnostic mock, first

Timed, marked against the public band descriptors, with a written breakdown of each module. You will know where you stand before you spend a rupee on a test booking.

Writing Task 2 gets the most hours

It is where the majority of our students are stuck at 5.5 or 6.0, it carries double the weight of Task 1, and it is the module that cannot be fixed by tricks. Essays are marked and returned with corrections, not just a band.

Speaking practice with a human

Recorded, played back, and picked apart. Most students never hear themselves and never realise how much they fill silence with um. Part 2, the two minute long turn, gets drilled until it stops being frightening.

Lahore branch or online

Our Lahore office runs in-person sessions and we run online sessions for students outside Lahore and for those balancing a job. Ask us for the current schedule and fee.

The right test, not just IELTS

If your diagnostic shows you will score higher on PTE, we will tell you that, even though it means a different course. Booking the wrong test is the most expensive mistake in test prep.

Tied to your actual application

We coach against the band your target course needs and the deadline your target intake sets, not against a generic 7.0. That is the whole advantage of doing test prep with the people handling your admission.

How long it takes

From a genuine 5.5 to a 6.5, plan on six to eight weeks of daily work. From 6.5 to a 7.0 in every band, which is what nursing and higher migration points need, plan on three months or more, because the top of the scale gets steeper. Anyone selling you a band in two weeks is selling you a retake.

Questions

What students in Pakistan ask about IELTS.

What IELTS band do I need to study in Australia from Pakistan?

For most Australian universities, 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. The Student visa (subclass 500) has its own separate floor of 6.0 overall, and 5.5 is accepted if you package at least ten weeks of ELICOS English before your main course. Nursing, teaching and several health courses ask for 7.0 in all four bands, which is a much bigger jump than it looks. Requirements change, so confirm the current rule with us and with the university before you book a test.

Should I take IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training?

Academic if you are applying to a university or a professional programme. General Training if you are applying for skilled migration, work, or some vocational and secondary school routes. Australian skilled migration accepts General Training for its English levels, while a university admission almost always requires Academic. If you might do both, take Academic, because Academic is accepted more widely.

What is IELTS for UKVI and do I need it?

IELTS for UKVI is the same test content, taken at a centre approved by the UK Home Office, with a different booking and a higher fee. It is required for pre-sessional English and for courses below degree level. Many degree-level universities can accept a standard IELTS Academic, but a lot of them still ask for the UKVI version anyway. Get the answer in writing from your university before you pay, because a standard IELTS cannot be upgraded to a UKVI result afterwards.

How is the overall IELTS band calculated?

Each of the four modules is scored from 0 to 9 in half bands. The overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. An average that ends in .25 rounds up to the next half band and .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So 6.0, 6.5, 6.5, 6.5 averages to 6.375, which is reported as 6.5. This is why a single weak module, usually Writing, drags a whole application down.

How long does it take to prepare for IELTS?

If your English is already at a solid 5.5 and you need 6.5, plan on six to eight weeks of serious daily work. If you are starting lower, or you need 7.0 or more for nursing or migration points, plan on three months or more. Nobody honest can promise you a band in two weeks. What we can promise is that you will know your real starting band after one diagnostic mock, which is where every plan should begin.

How much does IELTS cost in Pakistan and where do I take it?

IELTS is delivered in Pakistan by the British Council and by IDP, in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and several other cities, on paper and on computer. The fee has risen every year and sits in the tens of thousands of rupees, with IELTS for UKVI costing more than standard IELTS. Check the current fee on the British Council or IDP Pakistan site before you budget, because any figure quoted by an agent is out of date within months.

Can I retake just one module if only my Writing is low?

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit a single module rather than the whole test, and it is offered on computer-delivered IELTS at participating centres. Two cautions. First, confirm your test centre in Pakistan actually offers it. Second, confirm the university or authority you are applying to accepts a One Skill Retake result, because acceptance is not universal. If either answer is no, you retake the whole test.

Is IELTS harder than PTE?

Neither is harder in an absolute sense. They are hard in different places. IELTS is marked by a human examiner and the speaking test is a real conversation, which suits students who talk well and freeze at a microphone. PTE is scored by a machine, results come back in days rather than weeks, and it suits students who type fast and speak clearly and steadily. We look at your diagnostic mock in both and tell you honestly which one your score will be higher in.
