PTE Academic coaching, Lahore and online
PTE Academic is marked by a machine, sat in one two hour session, and usually returns a result in about two days. Every Australian university accepts it, and so does the Department of Home Affairs. It is not automatically the better test. For a lot of Pakistani students, it is the right one.
Why students switch
Speaking is recorded into a microphone and scored by algorithm. There is no examiner reading your nerves, no interview to perform. Students who go blank in front of a person routinely score higher here.
Typically inside two business days, occasionally up to five. When an intake deadline is two weeks away, PTE is often the only test that still fits in the calendar.
Accepted by every Australian and New Zealand university and by the Department of Home Affairs for student visa purposes. If Australia is the plan, PTE is fully in play.
The risk nobody mentions
The machine that cannot be biased also cannot be charitable. It will not lean in to understand a heavy accent, forgive a long pause, or wait while you find the word. PTE scores fluency and pronunciation hard, and because its items are integrated, weak speaking quietly pulls down your Reading and Listening scores too. If you speak English well but slowly and hesitantly, PTE can score you lower than IELTS would have. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to take a diagnostic before you book.
The test
The whole test runs about two hours in a single session at a Pearson centre, with no separate speaking appointment. Scores are reported on a scale from 10 to 90, both overall and for each of the four communicative skills.
Part 1
Personal introduction, Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, then Summarise Written Text and an essay. The longest part, and the part that decides your overall score.
Part 2
Fill in the blanks, reorder paragraphs, and multiple choice. Short, dense, and heavily time pressured. The blanks items test collocation, which is exactly what rote vocabulary lists do not teach.
Part 3
Summarise Spoken Text, multiple choice, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Write from Dictation. Write from Dictation carries weight far beyond its size, because it feeds both Listening and Writing.
Typing speed is a real, unglamorous PTE skill. The essay and the summary items are timed tightly, and students who hunt for keys lose marks that have nothing to do with their English. If you type with two fingers, fix that before you book.
Score conversion
Based on the concordance Pearson publishes between PTE Academic and IELTS. Use it to translate a requirement you already know into a target you can train for. Do not use it as proof of equivalence, because every university and every immigration authority publishes its own table, and theirs is the one that counts.
The Australian English levels named above are the Department of Home Affairs bands used in the skilled migration points test. They are quoted here as general information only, not as immigration advice. Rules and score tables change, so confirm the current requirement with the institution and with a registered migration agent before you rely on it.

A human examiner marks Writing and conducts Speaking face to face. Judgement, and therefore variation, is part of the system.
PTE
Scored entirely by algorithm. Identical answers get identical scores, and there is no examiner having a bad morning.
IELTS
An 11 to 14 minute conversation with a real examiner. Rewards natural interaction. Punishing if interviews make you freeze.
PTE
You speak into a microphone in a room full of other candidates also speaking. No eye contact, no judgement. Rewards clear, steady, fluent delivery and punishes long pauses and mumbling.
IELTS
Roughly 3 to 5 days for computer-delivered and up to about 13 days for paper.

Typically 2 days, sometimes within 48 hours, and it can stretch to about 5 days.

One Skill Retake lets you resit a single module at participating computer-delivered centres, if your institution accepts it.

There is no single-skill retake. A weak Writing score means sitting the whole test again.

The broadest acceptance in the world, including the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe, and by nearly every professional body.

Accepted by every Australian and New Zealand university and by the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Approved for UK visas as a UKVI test. Accepted by many but not all US and Canadian institutions and professional bodies.
How we would decide
Australia or New Zealand, a deadline in the next few weeks, decent typing, and you get nervous in interviews. Take PTE. The USA, a professional body, or a university that has not confirmed it accepts PTE, or you write far better than you type. Take IELTS. Genuinely unsure. Sit a diagnostic mock in both with us and let the two scores settle the argument, because guessing costs a full test fee.

It is a small item with disproportionate weight across Listening and Writing. Students who drill it properly see the fastest overall score movement of anything in PTE.

Questions
Not easier, different. PTE is easier for students who freeze in front of a human examiner, who type quickly, and who speak clearly and steadily. IELTS is easier for students who talk well to people, who write better than they type, and whose pronunciation is heavily accented, because a human examiner can understand an accent that a machine penalises. We run a diagnostic in both and tell you which one your score is genuinely higher in.
Usually within about two business days, sometimes faster, and occasionally up to about five. IELTS computer-delivered typically takes three to five days and paper can take close to two weeks. If you are chasing an intake deadline that is a fortnight away, that difference is the entire reason to sit PTE.
On Pearson's published concordance, IELTS 6.5 sits at roughly PTE 58, and IELTS 6.0 at roughly PTE 50. Treat those as a guide only. Every university publishes its own PTE requirement, and the Australian Department of Home Affairs publishes its own table for visa English levels, where Competent English is PTE 50, Proficient is 65 and Superior is 79. Always use the requirement published by the institution or authority you are applying to, not a conversion.

PTE Academic UKVI is on the UK Home Office list of approved Secure English Language Tests, so it can be used for UK visa purposes, but you must book the UKVI version and your university must accept it. In Canada, PTE Academic is accepted for study permit purposes and by many institutions, though some universities and professional bodies still ask for IELTS. In the USA, acceptance is growing but is not universal, so check the department page of the specific university before you commit.
Because PTE items are integrated. A single Read Aloud task contributes to both Reading and Speaking. A Retell Lecture contributes to Listening and Speaking. So unclear pronunciation, long pauses, or a stumble does not just cost you Speaking points, it quietly bleeds into sections you thought were unrelated. This is the single most misunderstood thing about PTE, and it is why fluency drills matter more than vocabulary lists.
It depends entirely on the target, which is exactly the point. Around 50 clears the Australian student visa floor and many college entries. Around 58 to 65 opens direct entry at most Australian and UK universities. 65 or higher is what you want if you are thinking about migration points later, and 79 is the top English band. Do not chase 79 if your course needs 58. Get the score you need, and put the extra three months into your application instead.
PTE Academic is delivered at Pearson test centres in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, with several sittings a week, which usually means shorter waits for a seat than IELTS at peak season. Check the current fee and available dates on the official Pearson PTE site before you budget, because the fee is revised regularly.
